Often confused with denim due to its similar appearance, Chambray is set apart by its softer texture and lighter weight. Originally referred to as "Cambric," a plain-weave fabric from the French town of Cambrai, Chambray gained popularity in the United States during the early twentieth century. The combination of denim pants and chambray shirts became a common attire for many laborers, leading to the term "blue collar."
